by jeff Leave a Comment

Tiger Stick Baseball Pine Tar For SaleIt’s easy enough to find baseball pine tar for sale especially when you go online.

That’s because its use is quite popular.

In fact, it’s often used in ways that are prohibited by many baseball leagues yet so many people—even (or especially) by major leaguers.

So let’s take a closer look at what this is, what using pine tar means for baseball and if it really helps you hit better.

What is Pine Tar?

Baseball pine tar is a sticky material that comes from pine wood.

The wood is decomposed rapidly through a process that uses heat and pressure, and the results are pine tar along with charcoal.

It’s long been used to preserve wood, and in some cases it has also been used to weatherproof rope.

It has a long history of maritime use, but today athletes also use it for a variety of sports.

And its use in baseball so ubiquitous that rules have been made specifically about the use of pine tar.

Pine Tar and Hitting

Pine tar can be very sticky. If you know just how sticky tree sap can be, then you already have a fair idea of how sticky it is.

And that helps a lot when you’re trying to hit a ball with a bat.

This is especially true of wooden bats, because they don’t have the special grips found on aluminum bats.

However, I personally know of players adding it to an aluminum or composite bat on the grip to make it extra sticky.

With the use of pine tar for baseball bats the stickiness helps batters get a better grip on the bat. So that lessens the chance that they’d lose their grip on the bat, which can then ply out to any directions.

That’s a relief for the catcher, the umpire, and just about any spectator nearby.

It also helps the hitter because the improved grip allows them to hold the bat more loosely. That reduces the sting they feel when they make contact with the baseball, and it also produces more pop so the ball travels farther.

How Much Baseball Pine Tar Can I Use?

But there’s a limit to how much pine tar a batter can apply to the bat. According to Major League rules [Rule 1.10(c) of the 2002 Official rules of Major League Baseball], batters can only apply up to 18 inches of pine tar from the handle.

If a bat is found with pine tar extending past this limit, the umpire can then keep the bat from being used in the game. But this must be done before the bat is in play.

If the bat has already been used to get a hit, then the umpire can’t nullify the hit and call the batter out.

A famous and controversial incident called the Pine Tar Game in 1983 involved the use of pine tar.

Today, current rules are clear about pine tar, although some allege that the rules are regularly broken. This is especially true about pine tar use for pitchers.

Which Pine Tar to Use?

When we talk about picking the best pine tar for baseball, we mean using pine tar for bats. That’s because the rules forbid applying “a foreign substance of any kind to the ball.”

So if you’re a pitcher, don’t even think about using it. In fact, in 2014 a Yankees starting pitcher was ejected for using it in a game against the Red Sox.

But if you’re a hitter, it’s perfectly okay to buy and use pine tar. In fact, you’re pretty much encouraged to find best baseball pine tar you can afford.

When you buy one, you can’t just use the price as the determining factor. You also need to read the reviews to see if it is really sticky.

This is the most important consideration, although if you are fastidious you may want to use pine tar that’s not messy and that’s easy to use.

If you’re a stickler for tradition you may want to use pine tar in a jar. If you want something mess-free and easy to use, a pine tar stick may be more to your liking.

A-Rod uses sticks, and so did Jeter when he played. This Tiger brand is a bit more pricey, but then again you may consider it money well spent when you don’t mess your uniform with the stuff.

Just use it with the Rosin bag for maximum tackiness.

  2. Annex Extra Sticky Pine Tar – Squeeze Tube. Gone are the days of the traditional pine tar rag. This squeeze tube though provides 100% pure pine tar.

It’s a nice, thick paste that hasn’t been diluted into a useless liquid or spray. Just a little bit will go a long way.

It’s actually not too messy, and it can last for a long while.

The best baseball pine tar for sale as show above will give you a good grip.

Just remember, that for some people the best option is actually a very good batting glove!
