2018 Mizuno Ghost BBCOR

Top 5 BBCOR Excellence BadgeThe 2018 Mizuno Ghost BBCOR has arrived, just in time for the new season with lots of excited baseball players waiting for the spring to arrive.

But this is a sensational new bat from Mizuno, and it’s quite likely that some kids won’t wait for spring to try it out.

That’s especially true if they live in warmer climates, like Florida, California, Texas, or Mexico.

What’s really exciting is that they’ve released a new series of bats, and it’s finally a full composite bat.

Mizuno has been making sporting goods equipment for a century now, and this is the first full composite bat they’ve released. It completes their range of bats at last, so they have something for every preference.

To avoid some confusion, let’s clarify a few matters.

This is distinct from the Ghost X from Easton, which is the new name for the Mako.

Also, this comes in 2 different models. The Youth USAbat has a (-10) drop, but that’s not what we’re focusing on.

Instead, we’re going to highlight the 2018 Mizuno Ghost BB18GHST model.

2018 Mizuno Ghost Drop 3

Features of the 2018 Mizuno Ghost

So what exactly can you expect from this new bat series from Mizuno baseball?

  • This is a BBCOR-certified bat that you can use for official high school and collegiate leagues. These include the NCAA and the NFHS.

This means that it complies with the various restrictions and guidelines, so it has a 2 5/8-inch diameter barrel, and it has a -3 drop.

  • This is a 2-piece composite baseball bat.

  • It’s available in several sizes ranging from 31 inches long (with a 28-ounce weight) to 34 inches (31 ounces).

  • It has a balanced swing weight, so it’s much easier to control than an end-loaded bat.

It’s been designed to have an extremely low MOI (moment of inertia), and Mizuno claims that it’s the most balanced bat in the whole brand lineup of bats.

Have You Heard About the 2018 Mizuno Ghost BBCOR Barrel?

  • This features the Black Onyx Barrel, which doesn’t need any sort of break-in period to perform at its best. You can literally take it out of the wrapper and use it to play in a championship game.

  • This feels you have the biggest and longest barrel, because its sweet spot is huge. In fact, you may find it very difficult to find a bigger sweet spot in the whole baseball bat industry.

  • This bat uses the Power Ring technology, which involves the insertion of two special rings inside the bat.

These rings somehow enable the barrel to be longer while it also passes BBCOR certification.

  • The rings also improve the sound the bat makes when it makes contact.

  • The barrel is connected to a stiff carbon handle with a special design. It’s been made to reduce the loss of energy that occurs when your bat makes contact with the baseball.

Essentially, the energy is properly placed back into the ball to make the ball travel faster and farther.

That energy doesn’t go into the handle where it can make your hands feel uncomfortable or even painful.

  • This also comes with the Speed-Helix Grip. This offers your hands greater comfort as you handle the bat, while it still remains secure in your hands.

  • The bat features cylinder seaming, which enables more consistent performance across the whole barrel. This is another feature that enlarges the sweet spot.

  • This 2018 Mizuno Ghost BBCOR baseball bat comes with a 1-year warranty.

Pros of the 2018 Mizuno Ghost BBCOR

It seems evident that the Mizuno Ghost offers a lot of advantages for older baseball players. Let’s list some of the more notable benefits.

  • Perhaps the most crucial advantage of the Ghost is that it seems to offer the biggest and longest barrel in the BBCOR baseball bat market today.

Its sweet spot is huge. It may be bigger than the 2017 Maxcor! This sweet spot is the area in the bat that can out the most force on the baseball, while it minimizes the sting of the vibrations on your hand.

With such a large sweet spot, it feels like the baseball always come out with greater force when it makes contact with your bat.

  • Another reason for the greater force is the way the handle was designed. The way it reflects the energy back to the baseball instead of your hands means that the ball will travel with greater force.

That means it will go faster and farther, increasing the chances of getting to first base safely.

  • 2018 Mizuno Ghost BBCOR Handle

  • It’s also quite notable that several of its features, such as the balanced swing weight and the comfortable handle and grip, combine to give you a bat that’s truly easy to control.

Such an advantage is very hard to ignore. You’re basically able to control the bat better.

This means that when you take a swing, it feels like you’ll make contact with the baseball more often.

You’ll reduce your foul balls, and increase the times when you put the ball in play.

As you become a better batter, you may then be able to more accurately put the baseball in a spot where the fielders can’t get at it easily.

Basically, it’s a bat that can give you more hits, compared to inferior bats.

The Feeling and Sound of the 2018 Mizuno Ghost BBCOR Baseball Bat

  • It’s also very comfy for your hands, and again that’s due to the handle and the large sweet spot.

Lots of baseball players don’t really like having their hands feel the sting of the vibrations upon contact.

It can get so and that some younger players may refuse to take a swing of the bat, just to avoid getting those stinging vibrations.

But this time you can take more swings without worrying about the state of your hands afterwards.

  • The sound of the bat is also much more satisfying. Upon contact when you hear that sound, you know you’ve made good contact with the baseball.

Non-players may think that this is a trivial matter, but real baseball players know otherwise.

A great sound matters, much like in video games when you hear a satisfying explosion when you hit an enemy spaceship. It somehow motivates you to continue to succeed.

  • Mizuno Ghost BBCOR EndCap

  • It’s great that you get all these advantages without the need for a break-in period.

Its “out of the wrapper” performance is excellent, and lots of young baseball players appreciate that a break-in isn’t needed anymore.

So if you buy this in the middle of the baseball season because your old bat conked out, you can immediately use this right away.

  • This is also a very durable bat. While the warranty is standard, the Speed-Helix Grip does increase the durability.

Cons of the 2018 Mizuno Ghost

While this is undoubtedly a great bat, it won’t be perfect for everyone. Here are some issues that you need to think about.

  • The balanced swing weight of the bat isn’t really ideal for power hitters.

Despite the fact that it has a huge sweet spot and the bat is easy to control, some power hitters will still prefer an end-loaded bat, which this isn’t.

  • There’s also the glaring fact that it’s not exactly cheap. It’s true that its price is actually reasonable, as it’s similar to rival bats with the same performance specs.

The fact remains that some parents may not be able to justify buying this bat if their kids are just casual players.

Also, even some serious league baseball players may simply not be able to afford a bat this good.

  • One other thing: this is a new series of bats. Mizuno dares to compete with other brands in this premium 2-piece composite bat market, and that’s a good thing for players.

The issue is that most of the other bats have already been in the market for some years, so they were able to tweak their bats over the years to correct some mistakes along the way.

The 2018 Ghost, on the other hand, is version 1.0 so there has yet been no tweaks made.

That will be for the next year, when they find out how this bat performs in the field and they take note of customer comments and recommendations.

Final Verdict on This 2018 Mizuno Ghost BBCOR BB18GHST

So what’s the final word of this 2018 Mizuno Ghost BBCOR review?

All things considered, it’s an exciting option especially for Mizuno fans. Despite the price and the fact that it’s the first of its kind from Mizuno, it’s still a premium Mizuno bat.

Its performance is exhilarating, and it deserves to bear the Mizuno brand and to have this premium price.

What baseball players will notice first—and absolutely love—is that humungous sweet spot. It’s absolutely huge, giving the impression that you’re somehow wielding a huge barrel.

It’s as if every kind of contact will be a solid hit. This will do wonders for your confidence, and boosting your self-confidence will certainly make you a better player.

Then add the fact that this bat is so easy to control, and this bat becomes a work of art. Mizuno claims that it’s the most balanced bat in its lineup, and the control you have over the bat is truly magnificent.

That’s the essence of the 2018 Mizuno Ghost BBCOR: a huge barrel with a perfectly controlled swing. What kind of baseball player says no to that?
