I can’t wait to tell you all about the 2018 Mizuno Maxcor BBCOR bat! It’s in my top 10 this year along with it’s brother the 2018 Mizuno Ghost BBCOR.
Mizuno has been in the business of making athletic equipment for more than a hundred years now, so you can guess they know what they’re doing. That’s especially true with the 2018 Mizuno Maxcor BBCOR.
This is of course the latest version of that hot-performing premium baseball bat. Due to its premium status and excellent features, it commands an extremely high price. So is it worth all that money?
What you first need to understand is that the Maxcor baseball bat has been around for quite a while.
That’s a good thing; Mizuno has made some changes and tweaks based on user feedback to make it better each year.
Each new version has also benefited from the latest breakthroughs that the brand’s R&D scientists have come up with.
The 2017 model was a significant change from the versions of 2016 and 2015. The 2017 made those earlier models seem smaller and somehow heavier.
Now this latest 2018 model is just a slight tweak on the 2017, and there’s also a USABat version as well.
However, we are going to focus more on the 2018 Mizuno MAXCOR BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB18MAX model.

Features of the 2018 Mizuno Maxcor BBCOR: BB18MAX
So what kind of magic attributes does the new Maxcor have that it warrants such a high price?
We of course need to start with legalities. Is it ok to use for your league? It probably is, since it’s BBCOR-certified for high school and college leagues.
It’s been approved for both the NFHS and the NCAA. So it has all the required characteristics. It has the 2 5/8-inch barrel diameter and the -3 length to weight ratio (drop).
This is available in several sizes (and weights). You can get it in 1-inch increments, starting with 31 inches (28 ounces) up to 34 inches (31 ounces).
This offers a balanced swing weight.
One of the main features in this premium bat is the viscoelastic polyurethane (VP) sleeve that’s wrapped around the barrel of the bat.
This is a special and unique design that Mizuno is in the process of patenting.
This results in a longer flight for the baseball.
So what’s under that special sleeve? In this case, it has the exceptional HotMetal aluminum alloy core, and it’s a much stronger alloy than what you get in other bats and in previous Mizuno bats.
Since it’s much stronger, the geniuses at Mizuno were able to put in thinner walls that result in greater pop.
Obviously, the greater strength also means greater durability for the bat.
The metal inside the bat is also combined with the Mizuno CorTech wizardry. CorTech technology enables Mizuno to make the walls of the bat much thinner.
This is done by spreading the thickness towards the ends of the barrel, (towards the cap and the handle).
Connected to the barrel (and to the handle on the other end), you have the Dynamic Damper connection piece.
This offers a very smooth swing upon contact, and it ought to make you feel more comfortable.
This connection piece absorbs much of the vibrations that travel from the barrel upon contact, so this doesn’t go through the handle and to your hands.
In the handle, you get the Black Onyx Carbon material. This will provide you with a stiff and traditional feel that should make you feel comfortable due to the familiarity of the feeling.
The material works well in minimizing the sting in your hands should your bat make contact with the baseball outside the sweet spot.
It also helps that the handle also comes pre-wrapped with the terrific Supra-Helix grip. This gives you a secure yet snug grip on the handle.

Pros of the 2018 Mizuno Maxcor BBCOR Bat
So why should you pick this bat over all the other in the market? Here are some very compelling reasons:
Mizuno is one of the top brands in the business, and it’s obviously not a fly-by-night operation.
With more than a century of experience in making athletic equipment, you can be very sure that they have the necessary expertise in providing customer satisfaction.
This is also the latest version of a proven baseball bat model. Mizuno has made tweaks and improvements as a result of customer feedback over the years.
This looks fantastic. While of course the aesthetics isn’t exactly a top priority, there’s no doubt that the black and blue color scheme looks cool and downright lethal.
Take it out, and other players will look green with envy and admiration.
Certain features of the bat, such as the balanced and lower swing weight as well as the excellent handle, give you terrific control over the bat.
The barrel sleeve and the superior alloy core also combine to give the bat a much greater pop and travel flight than ever before.
You get more power from the barrel, plus the sleeve puts a stronger spin into the baseball so it can travel much farther.
Even a few feet of greater travel distance can be a huge difference between an easy out and a base hit.
The size of the sweet spot is insanely huge. This means several things for a baseball hitter, and all of them are beneficial.
It means that any contact with the baseball can result in a more solid impact, so the possibility of a hit increases.
This also reduces the chances of a mishit, thus the vibrations don’t travel through the bat.
This gives you a lower swing weight, and that leads to a faster bat speed when you take a swing.
This greater bat speed then results in more power upon contact, which again leads to the baseball travelling much farther, which increases the likelihood of reaching base safely.
Many features combine to minimize the sting your hands may feel. These features include the huge sweet spot, the vibration-dampening connection piece, and the carbon handle.
These give you the confidence you need to swing as hard as you can when you’re at bat.
As every athlete knows, the more confident you are the better you perform. That’s a rule that applies to pretty much everything in real life, and not just to baseball.
The grip offers a secure hold on the bat, and so again there’s no need to worry about losing your grip and letting the bat go.
It’s also comfortable to hold so there are no distractions when you take a swing.
The durability of this 2018 Mizuno Maxcor BBCOR bat is also impressive. While it does come with a standard 1-year warranty, the aluminum alloy inside the barrel is much stronger than any other alloy in the Mizuno lineup.
It’s also much stronger than the alloys you find in many of the baseball bats in the market today.

Cons of the 2018 Mizuno Maxcor BBCOR: BB18MAX
This won’t be a proper 2018 Mizuno Maxcor BBCOR review if we don’t acknowledge several issues that may cause you to hesitate buying this bat. Here are several notable drawbacks.
Perhaps the most glaring issue here is that this is extremely expensive. Even among other premium bats, the price you have to pay for this latest model is quite high.
It may be too high for casual players of the game, and even some serious league players may balk at the price tag.
Some may also argue that the differences between this model and the 2017 version aren’t all that great.
So you may want to think about getting a 2017 version, because at this time the price for that model may be much lower now. On the other hand, it may be difficult to find a brand new 2017 version of the Maxcor.
Also, this comes with a balanced swing weight. So it’s not exactly geared for power hitters.
Final Verdict on This 2018 Mizuno Maxcor BBCOR review
There is no question that this is a superior bat. It offers too many advantages for a serious baseball player to ignore.
Who doesn’t want a bat that can offer greater force upon impact with a lot more control?
Add the fact that you’re more confident because the risk of vibrations (and stinging) is significantly reduced, and you’ve got yourself a winner.
The real question here is if the 2018 Mizuno Maxcor BBCOR is worth the high price of admission.
There are several alternatives in the market that may offer similar performance at a lower price range.
Even the 2017 version may be good enough for you. But in the end, it’s up to you to decide if it’s worth the price.
This bat is one of the best high school bats this season.
